Anthony Mountney

As the son of a recognized horseman in Tasmania, Anthony has been around horses his entire life. With his passion for all things equine it was inevitable that his career would end up revolving around them.

After working in all aspects of the thoroughbred industry from foaling, yearling preparation, yearling sales, breaking, pre training it was racing where Anthony has chosen to focus. As a breaker and educator of young horses he has developed a unique understanding of the equine athlete and as such his racehorses training is targeted to each individual horse, rather than a production line training program. This hands on approach includes riding track work to determine the feel of each horse and develop a detailed understanding about the strengths and weaknesses of each horse in his care. To complete the cycle Anthony also retrains retired race horses and places them in suitably qualified equestrian homes.

Early in his career Anthony worked with champion horses and played a role in the development of Will Weasel who went on to win $2.5 million under Bart Cummings. Other ventures included working for Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Dubai and representing Australia in England with performance horses.

Anthony’s approach to training is multi-faceted, when a new horse comes in to the stable he observes how it settles in and then assesses how it moves in groundwork exercises. From there he will ride it on the track to see what idiosyncrasies can be identified. After all of this he tailors a program for the horse and incorporates the pace work with swimming and beach work to build muscle strength and stamina. After the foundations are laid the horses are constantly assessed to see how they are responding to training and focusing on what races they will be suited to including distances and track rating.
